A Minnesota Fan

Are You a Minnesota Fan?

The Minnesota Miracle!  Did you catch the end of the Vikings v. Saints game?!  I did…and it was thrilling…and I am not even a football fan!  But you know what?

I am a Minnesota fan.

There is so much about the Twin Cities and the overall culture of the state of Minnesota that has won over the heart of this “Okie from Muskogee” who was raised in the sweltering heat of mid-Missouri.

Minnesota has cool summer nights, beautiful snow falls.  Cold hands, warm hearts.  A culture that is deeply Scandinavian, but welcoming to people from all over the world!

And it’s in that welcoming spirit that I want to encourage you to consider hosting a Super Bowl party.

Even if the Vikings don’t “make it” to the big game.

Already planning a Super Bowl party?  Awesome! Can I challenge you to take it one step further?

Would you invite at least one person that may not have a place just to “have fun” and hang out with folks with no agenda?

There is more of them than you think!

Jesus was…and is…very interested in these types of folks.  Jesus, prompted by a guy shouting about how amazing it will be to hang out at God’s eternal party, tells the “Parable of the Great Feast.”  (A parable is just a story that teaches a lesson.)  You can check it out in Luke 14:15-24

Basically, the party host got a bunch of “Regrets” on his RSVPs from the proper, upright and “normal” folks.  So he said, “Fine!  Let’s invite people who will appreciate it!” So he told his servant to go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and invite the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’ After the servant had done this, he reported, ‘There is still room for more.’ So the party host said, ‘Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be full!”

God loves people, He loves a full house and He loves a good party!  That’s all heaven is…an eternal party full of people in God’s house!

So let’s take a cue from God and invite “that person” to your party!  Because if we’re honest, we can admit that we aren’t so different from them.  We are all at least spiritually poor, crippled, blind, and lame.

Knowing that (uh, like Case Keenum does!) makes it easier to invite people “like you” to a fun party, no agenda.  Just a party for a party’s sake can be one of the most loving things you can do for another human being!

Maybe you don’t know who you could invite.  Maybe you’re feeling really disconnected right now. You know, that feeling of being surrounded by people but completely alone?  Then I want to be sure to invite you to consider one of our Missional Small Groups.

These are just groups of everyday people who know their spiritual need and know where to get it satisfied.  They “do life together” by listening, laughing and praying with and for each other.  If that sounds like something you would like in your life, then click here to find one that’s a fit for you.

If you’d like some ideas about incorporating faith into your love of football, just go here.

And even if you don’t agree with me that faith and football can go hand in hand, I bet there’s one thing we can agree on…
