Greeting
You would think that our family would be the ones who support us the most. Sometimes. But sometimes they let us down... badly. Jesus was familiar with this. He was not respected in His hometown - and even by His own family!
Call To Worship
Pastor: Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. (Psalm 100:4)
All: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” (Leviticus 26:12; Jeremiah 32:38; Ezekiel 37:27)
Pastor: Jesus is God with us! He came among us. Enter into His presence with praise.
Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty
Open now Thy gates of beauty
Zion let me enter there
Where my soul in joyful duty
Waits for God who answers prayer
O how blessed is this place
Filled with solace light and grace
Gracious God I come before Thee
Come Thou also unto me
Where we find Thee and adore Thee
There a heaven on earth must be
To my heart O enter Thou
Let it be Thy temple now
Here Thy praise is gladly chanted
Here Thy seed is duly sown
Let my soul where it is planed
Bring forth precious sheaves alone
So that all I hear may be
Fruitful unto life in me
Thou my faith increase and quicken
Let me keep Thy gift divine
How so e'er temptations thicken
May Thy Word still o'er me shine
As my guiding star through life
As my comfort in all strife
Speak O God and I will hear Thee
Let Thy will be done indeed
May I undisturbed draw near Thee
While Thou dost Thy people feed
Here of life the fountain flows
Here is balm for all our woes
Scripture Reading
Matthew 13:54-58 - Coming to his hometown, [Jesus] began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.” And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.

Message: Difficult Relatives
Matthew 13:54-56 - Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren’t all his sisters with us?
"Isn't this Joseph's son?" = This is no Messiah! He's just like us!
Matthew 13:56-57 - Where then did this man get all these things?” And they took offense at him.
Matthew 13:57 - But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.”
Matthew 13:58 - And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.
Luke 4:29-30 - They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.
Mark 3:21 - When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”
John 7:1-5 - After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him. But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near, Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” For even his own brothers did not believe in him.
Matthew 3:17 - And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
Acts 1:9-14 - After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city. When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
We Will Not Be Shaken
For we trust in our God
And through His unfailing love
We will not be shaken
We will not be shaken
We will not be shaken
Though the battle rages
We will stand in the fight
Though the armies rise up against us on all sides
We will not be shaken
We will not be shaken
We will not be shaken
For in the hour of our darkest day
We will not tremble we won’t be afraid
Hope is rising like the light of dawn
Our God is for us He has overcome
For we trust in our God
And through His unfailing love
We will not be shaken
We will not be shaken
We will not be shaken
All those against Him will fall
For our God is stronger
He can do all things
No higher name we can call
For Jesus is greater
We can do all things
All those against Him will fall
For our God is stronger
He can do all things
No higher name we can call
For Jesus is greater
We can do all things
For we trust in our God
And through His unfailing love
We will not be shaken
We will not be shaken
We will not be shaken
Nicene Creed
All: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God. Begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God. Begotten, not made. Being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified. Who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Prayer
Confession & Forgiveness
Pastor: If You, Lord, kept a record of our sin, who could stand before You?
All: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore, You are feared! (Psalm 130)
Pastor: Let us confess our sins to God.
All: Faithful Lord, we confess that we are sinful from birth. We have sinned in the ways we have thought, spoken, and acted. We have not always shown love to family members. We have not trusted You with all our hearts, and often put ourselves before You in our lives. Forgive us for the sake of our Savior.
Pastor: Jesus Christ gave Himself over to death for sinners like you and me. In His name and at His command I forgive you all your sins. No matter what you and your family may face, know that He is present, walking beside you.
Communion
The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod holds the Biblical teaching that in Communion we receive the true body and blood of Jesus Christ with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins. If you are a baptized Christian who has been instructed in the Biblical teaching of the real presence of the Christ in this meal and grace through faith in Christ, and if you agree with our confession of faith, please join with the fellowship of disciples in Holy Communion.
“Everyone should examine themselves first, and then eat the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.” (1 Corinthians 11:28-29)
The Lord’s Prayer
All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
Blessing
Colossians 3:13-15 - Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.
Build My Life
Worthy of every song we could ever sing
Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for You
We live for You
Jesus the name above every other name
Jesus the only one who could ever save
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for You
We live for You
Holy there is no one like You
There is none beside You
Open up my eyes in wonder
And show me who You are
And fill me with Your heart
And lead me in Your love to those around me
Jesus the name above every other name
Jesus the only one who could ever save
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for You
We live for You
Holy there is no one like You
There is none beside You
Open up my eyes in wonder
And show me who You are
And fill me with Your heart
And lead me in Your love to those around me
I will build my life upon Your love
It is a firm foundation
I will put my trust in You alone
And I will not be shaken
I will build my life upon Your love
It is a firm foundation
I will put my trust in You alone
And I will not be shaken
Holy there is no one like You
There is none beside You
Open up my eyes in wonder
And show me who You are
And fill me with Your heart
And lead me in Your love to those around me
