He Gets Us - Grief

Death. It is inevitable for our family and friends. Death even brought Jesus to tears. Maybe you recently said goodbye to a loved one. We can’t ignore it and assume that we will not be affected. Grief is real. But, we can be sure Jesus gets grief. He dealt with it personally so He is able to help you through it.

Rise Up (Lazarus)

In the dark and all alone
Growing comfortable
Are you too scared to move
And walk out of this tomb
Buried underneath
The lies that you believed
Safe and sound
Stuck in the ground
Too lost to be found

You're just asleep
And it's time to leave

Come on and rise up
Take a breath you're alive now
Can't you hear the voice of Jesus calling us
Out from the grave like Lazarus
You're brand new
The power of death couldn't hold you
Can't you hear the voice of Jesus calling us
Out of the grave like Lazarus
Rise up rise up rise up
Out from the grave like Lazarus

When he said your name
The thing that filled your veins
Was more than blood
It's the kind of love
That washes sin away
Now the door is open wide
And the stone's been rolled aside
The old is gone the light has come

Come on and rise up
Take a breath you're alive now
Can't you hear the voice of Jesus calling us
Out from the grave like Lazarus
You're brand new
The power of death couldn't hold you
Can't you hear the voice of Jesus calling us
Out of the grave like Lazarus
Rise up rise up rise up
Out from the grave like Lazarus

He's calling us to walk out of the dark
He's giving us new resurrected hearts
He's calling us to walk out of the dark
He's giving us new resurrected hearts

Come on and rise up
Take a breath you're alive now
Can't you hear the voice of Jesus calling us
Out from the grave like Lazarus
You're brand new
The power of death couldn't hold you
Can't you hear the voice of Jesus calling us
Out of the grave like Lazarus
Rise up rise up rise up
Out from the grave like Lazarus
Rise up rise up rise up
Out from the grave like Lazarus

Comfort In Grief

Pastor: Scripture assures us of God's closeness to those in pain.

All: "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18)

Pastor: The Bible encourages us to befriend those who face sadness, highlighting the role of the community in sharing and alleviating individual grief.

All: "Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn." (Romans 12:15)

Pastor: God's children are encouraged to place our trust in Him during times of distress.

All: "Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God." (Psalm 42:11)

Pastor: Jesus assures each one of us that you can find peace in Him.

All: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." (John 14:27)

Pastor: The Bible offers a message of hope that extends beyond the present suffering to a future where pain and grief will be no more.

All: "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." (Revelation 21:4)

Yes I Will

I count on one thing
The same God that never fails
Will not fail me now
You won't fail me now
In the waiting
The same God who's never late
Is working all things out
You're working all things out

Yes I will lift You high
In the lowest valley
Yes I will bless Your name
Yes I will sing for joy
When my heart is heavy
All my days yes I will

I count on one thing
The same God that never fails
Will not fail me now
You won't fail me now
In the waiting
The same God who's never late
Is working all things out
You're working all things out

Yes I will lift You high
In the lowest valley
Yes I will bless Your name
Yes I will sing for joy
When my heart is heavy
All my days yes I will
For all my days yes I will

I choose to praise
To glorify glorify
The name of all names
That nothing can stand against
I choose to praise
To glorify glorify
The name of all names
That nothing can stand against
I choose to praise
To glorify glorify
The name of all names
That nothing can stand against
I choose to praise
To glorify glorify
The name of all names
That nothing can stand against

Yes I will lift You high
In the lowest valley
Yes I will bless Your name
Yes I will sing for joy
When my heart is heavy
All my days yes I will
For all my days yes I will
For all my days yes I will

Scripture Reading

John 11:32-37 - When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. “Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied. Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”

STP KIDS Dismissal

STP KIDS is the Children’s Ministry at St. Peter’s Edina, designed for all children from 6 months to 10 years old (Grade 5). Older children are welcome to participate as helpers. Our vision is to partner with parents in raising up a generation of children that will seek their God-given Kingdom mission and impact their world for Jesus!

Message: Why Did Jesus Cry?

John 11:14-15 - “Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe.”

John 11:1-4 - Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.”

John 11:11-15 - He went on to tell them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.” His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep. So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe.”

John 11:21-27 - “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

Grieving brings: Doubt
Grieving brings: Hope
Grieving brings: Comfort
Grieving brings: Anger
Grieving brings: Tears
Grieving brings: Rescue

John 11:38-44 - Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. “Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.” Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

1 Corinthians 15:26 - The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

1 Corinthians 15:54 - “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”

Prayer

If you are in need of prayer, we would love the opportunity to pray with you! You can post a prayer on our online prayer wall, or submit a private prayer to our prayer team.

The Lord’s Prayer

All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

Matthew 5:4 - “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

Living Hope

How great the chasm that lay between us
How high the mountain I could not climb
In desperation I turned to heaven
And spoke Your name into the night
Then through the darkness Your loving-kindness
Tore through the shadows of my soul
The work is finished the end is written
Jesus Christ my living hope

Who could imagine so great a mercy
What heart could fathom such boundless grace
The God of ages stepped down from glory
To wear my sin and bear my shame
The cross has spoken I am forgiven
The King of kings calls me His own
Beautiful Savior I’m Yours forever
Jesus Christ my living hope

Hallelujah
Praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah
Death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in Your name
Jesus Christ my living hope
Hallelujah
Praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah
Death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in Your name
Jesus Christ my living hope

Then came the morning that sealed the promise
Your buried body began to breathe
Out of the silence the Roaring Lion
Declared the grave has no claim on me
Then came the morning that sealed the promise
Your buried body began to breathe
Out of the silence the Roaring Lion
Declared the grave has no claim on me
Jesus Yours is the victory

Hallelujah
Praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah
Death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in Your name
Jesus Christ my living hope
Hallelujah
Praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah
Death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in Your name
Jesus Christ my living hope
Jesus Christ my living hope
Oh God You are my living hope
