Greeting & Announcements

Step into Nazareth, the small hometown of Mary and Joseph—a town in which, through Gabriel's visit, God begins to make His home with us. Our time in this place will remind us that Jesus makes His home with us in our hearts this Christmas and dwells with us always.

From Nazareth: The Birth of Jesus Annoucned

Pastor: In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said,

All: “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Pastor: Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her,

All: “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus."

Pastor: "He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

Oh Come Oh Come Emmanuel

Oh come oh come Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exiile here
Until the Son of God appear

Rejoice rejoice Emmanuel
Shall come to you O Israel

Oh come our Wisdom from on high
Who ordered all things mightily
To us the path of knowledge show
And teach us in her ways to go

Rejoice rejoice Emmanuel
Shall come to you O Israel

From Nazareth: The Beginning of Jesus’ Ministry

Pastor: Leaving Nazareth, Jesus went and lived in Capernaum, which was by lake Galilee in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali—to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah: “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”

All: From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

Oh Come Oh Come Emmanuel

Oh come our Dayspring From on high
And cheer us by Your drawing nigh
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And deaths dark shadows put to flight

Rejoice rejoice Emmanuel
Shall come to you O Israel

Oh come Desire of nations bind
In one the hearts of all mankind
Oh bid our sad divisions cease
And be Yourself our King of peace

Rejoice rejoice Emmanuel
Shall come to you O Israel

Advent Prayer

Scripture Reading

John 1:40-46 - Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter). The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.” Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote —Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.

STP KIDS Dismissal

STP KIDS is the Children’s Ministry at St. Peter’s Edina, designed for all children from 6 months to 10 years old (Grade 5). Older children are welcome to participate as helpers. Our vision is to partner with parents in raising up a generation of children that will seek their God-given Kingdom mission and impact their world for Jesus!

Message: Nazareth

Luke 1:26-33 - …God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

Luke 1:34-38 - “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

What can we learn from Nazareth?

The Lord’s Prayer

All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

Luke 1:46-50 - “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me—holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.

Let The Earth Now Praise The Lord

Let the earth now praise the Lord
Who has truly kept His word
And at last to us did send
Christ the sinners help and friend

What the fathers most desired
What the prophets heart inspired
What they longed for many a year
Stands fulfilled in glory here

Abrams promised great reward
Zions helpers Jacobs Lord
Him of two-fold race behold
Truly came as long foretold

Welcome O my Savior now
Joyful Lord to You I bow
Come into my heart I pray
Oh prepare yourself a way
