Red Letter Challenge - Giving

When we care more about the stuff we’ve accumulated than helping out those in need, when we care more about the money we’re making than spending time with our family, and when we look to the money in our bank accounts instead of looking to God for our security, we need to totally change our relationship to money.

Welcome!

Confession & Forgiveness

Pastor: Merciful Lord,

All: I confess my sin to You today. Instead of recognizing You as the giver of all good things, my happiness is far too dependent upon my possessions and wealth. I have failed to give to others as You have given to me. I have been foolish with the resources You entrust to me, instead of using them to further Your Kingdom.

Pastor: God has been generous to you as seen clearly in the cross where Jesus gave his life so that you would be forgiven and find peace. May your response, beginning today, be a changed heart.

Alabaster Heart

So here it is my alabaster heart
I’m keeping nothing back from who You are
No hidden treasure veiled by key or lock
You’re a lifetime worth of worship
And that’s only just the start

Here it is my every waking day
The minutes hours the years of endless praise
For You’re worthy far beyond all I could say
There’s a lifetime worth of worship
In the nuance of Your names

So let it rise like incense
My whole life a fragrance
Every ounce here broken at Your feet
Every breath an offering
My heart cries
These lungs sing over You
My worthy King of Kings

There it is Your alabaster cross
Giving all You are for all I’m not
I can’t believe that’s the kind of King You are
How could I not bring a lifetime
Worth of worship to You God

So let it rise like incense
My whole life a fragrance
Every ounce here broken at Your feet
Every breath an offering
My heart cries
These lungs sing over You
My worthy King of Kings

All my love
All my love
All my love
You can have it all

All my heart and
All my soul
All I own
You can have it all

All my love
All my love
All my love
You can have it all

All my heart and
All my soul
All I own
You can have it all

All my love
All my love
All my love
You can have it all

All my heart and
All my soul
All I own
You can have it all

All my heart and
All my soul
All I own
You can have it all

You can have it all
You can have it all
You can have it all
You can have it all

Scripture Reading

Matthew 6:1-4 - “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

STP KIDS Dismissal

STP KIDS is the Children’s Ministry at St. Peter’s Edina, designed for all children from 6 months to 10 years old (Grade 5). Older children are welcome to participate as helpers. Our vision is to partner with parents in raising up a generation of children that will seek their God-given Kingdom mission and impact their world for Jesus!

Message: Giving

5 Principles
1. Being
2. Forgiving
3. Serving
4. Giving
5. Going

It’s impossible to be a stingy Christian

Money is the number one idol in our lives

Luke 21:1-4  - As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”

Matthew 6:21 - “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

You never look more like God than when you are a giver

Creed

Pastor: What do you mean when you confess, “I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth”?

All: I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them. He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have. He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life. He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil. All this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me.  For all it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is most certainly true.

Prayer

If you are in need of prayer, we would love the opportunity to pray with you! You can post a prayer on our online prayer wall, or submit a private prayer to our prayer team.

Communion

The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod holds the Biblical teaching that in Communion we receive the true body and blood of Jesus Christ with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins. If you are a baptized Christian who has been instructed in the Biblical teaching of the real presence of the Christ in this meal and grace through faith in Christ, and if you agree with our confession of faith, please join with the fellowship of disciples in Holy Communion.

“Everyone should examine themselves first, and then eat the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.” (1 Corinthians 11:28-29)

The Lord’s Prayer

All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

Luke 6:38 - “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Come Thou Fount

Come Thou Fount of ev'ry blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy redeeming love

Here I raise my Ebenezer
Hither by Thy help I come
And I hope by Thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wand'ring from the fold of God
He to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood

Oh to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
Let Thy goodness like a fetter
Bind my wand'ring heart to Thee
Prone to wander Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above
Here's my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above

Here's my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above
