Words To Live By - Repent

Welcome!

Thanks for joining us this morning! We’re so glad you’re here with us. If you’re new here and want to find out a bit more about our service, have questions, or want to connect, click the button below.

Today’s word to live by: REPENT
Repent means “turn around” or “change your mind” or “be sorry enough to go back and redo things right.” If you’re going the wrong way, turn around. If you’re moving toward something bad, turn away. If you’re looking for God’s goodness, turn toward Him. Lent is a season when followers of Christ concentrate on changing, improving, doing things that help us walk closer to God.

ORDER OF WORSHIP

Christ Be Magnified

Were creation suddenly articulate
With a thousand tongues to lift one cry
From north to south and east to west
We'd hear Christ be magnified

Were the whole earth echoing His eminence
His name would burst from sea and sky
From rivers to the mountain tops
We'd hear Christ be magnified

O Christ be magnified
Let His praise arise
Christ be magnified in me
O Christ be magnified
From the altar of my life
Christ be magnified in me

When every creature finds its inmost melody
And every human heart its native cry
Then in one enraptured hymn of praise
We'll sing Christ be magnified

O Christ be magnified
Let His praise arise
Christ be magnified in me
O Christ be magnified
From the altar of my life
Christ be magnified in me

I won't bow to idols
I'll stand strong and worship You
And if it puts me in the fire
I'll rejoice 'cause You're there too
I won't be formed by feelings
I’ll hold fast to what is true
If the cross brings transformation
Then I'll be crucified with You
'Cause death is just the doorway
Into resurrection life
If I join You in Your suffering
Then I'll join You when You rise
And when You return in glory
With all the angels and the saints
My heart will still be singing
My song will be the same

O Christ be magnified
Let His praise arise
Christ be magnified in me
O Christ be magnified
From the altar of my life
Christ be magnified in me
O Christ be magnified
Let His praise arise
Christ be magnified in me
O Christ be magnified
From the altar of my life
Christ be magnified in me

Greeting

Confession & Forgiveness

Pastor: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

People: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. Psalm 130:3-4 NIV

Pastor: Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord. Acts 3:19-20

(Silence for personal repentance and prayer)

Pastor: O Almighty God,

People: Merciful Father, we have turned away from You and sinned against You in our thoughts, in our words, and in our actions. We have done the things You forbid, and we have not done the things You command. We have loved and served ourselves rather than You, and have not loved our neighbors as You have loved us. For the sake of Jesus Christ, we are bold to ask forgiveness. Turn us by the power of Your Holy Spirit, that we may love and serve You with our whole heart and soul. Amen.

Lord I Need You

Lord I come I confess
Bowing here I find my rest
Without You I fall apart
You're the one that guides my heart

Lord I need You
Oh I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You

Where sin runs deep
Your grace is more
Where grace is found
Is where You are
And where You are
Lord I am free
Holiness is Christ in me

Lord I need You
Oh I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You

So teach my song to rise to You
When temptation comes my way
And when I cannot stand I'll fall on You
Jesus You're my hope and stay

Lord I need You
Oh I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You
You're my one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You

My one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You

Scripture Reading

Luke 13:1-9 - Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.” Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’ “‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’”

STP Kids Dismissal

STP Kids is the Children’s Ministry at St. Peter’s Edina, designed for all children from 6 months to 10 years old (Grade 5). Our vision is to partner with parents in raising up a generation of children that will seek their God-given Kingdom mission and impact their world for Jesus!

Message: Repent

Luke 13:3 - I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.

Luke 13:3 - …unless you repent, you too will all perish.

Haggai 1:5 - Take a good, hard look at your life. Think it over.

Wash Out - Are there actions, behaviors, habits, or sins that need to be “washed out” of your life?
Wash In - Are there good things God wants to “wash into” your life?

2 Peter 1:2-11 - Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

Acts 3:19 - “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord”

Come Thou Fount

Come Thou Fount of ev'ry blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy redeeming love

Here I raise my Ebenezer
Hither by Thy help I come
And I hope by Thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wand'ring from the fold of God
He to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood

Oh to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
Let Thy goodness like a fetter
Bind my wand'ring heart to Thee
Prone to wander Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above
Here's my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above

Here's my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above

Lent Hymn Reflections

You are invited during Lent for a reflective time that will make use of some of the great hymns of the passion. By request we are returning to weekly midweek services Wednesdays, at 6pm! The service is 30 minutes in length and includes a message based on one of the powerful hymns of Lent. Bring your singing voice or your appreciation of the theological poetry found in hymns — or both!

Pastor Led Sunday Bible Class

Every Sunday you are invited to join with fellow worshipers to study the Sunday texts more in depth. Examine the context to see the setting of the story. Be challenged to apply Biblical truth to your life. At 10:30am in the Discipleship Room to the right as you exit the sanctuary. Bring a cup of coffee and pick up a treat to enjoy on your way in. Life Application Bibles are provided for your study. Pastor Dave will lead us through the powerful and lasting impact of repentance today.

Assistance for Ukrainians

We have two opportunities to do something for the people of Ukrain. Through the ULC (Ukraine Lutheran Church) support is provided directly to those in Ukraine. Donate directly through Lutheran Church Charities Ukrainian Relief Fund button above. We now have a partnership with the First Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Church in St. Louis Park and their missionary, Todd Carlson, who is helping Ukrainian refugees in Poland. Donate through St. Peter’s giving tools with the Refugee Relief button above, or place a gift in your offering (mark your gift First Ukrainian). God is at work, through His people, to show, as the Apostle Paul states - One Lord, One Faith, One Body and Spirit!

Intersections

They are places where faith and real life meet. Here at St. Peter's, we welcome some short workshops that will prepare you to live out our faith in practical ways. Intersections are brief 15-minute workshops where Pastor Mark will present a brief insight with a few suggestions to help you apply it. They will all be online so there will be no travel. Participate from anywhere. Each Intersection will be live and participatory. 8:00am on the even Saturdays every month (not the odd Saturdays!) Here is the Zoom Link.
The next Intersections:

  • The Blessing: learn how to bless your loved ones this spring - March 26

  • Households: the Bible mentions households over 2000 times - define your influence - April 2
