Greeting
(Mark Wheeler)
"And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death - even death on a cross!" Philippians 2:8 (NIV)
This week we invite you to sit at the cross. It will not be comfortable, but it is there that you have been welcomed back into a relationship with God. Once upon a tree... your Savior restored you. So we pray: "More of You, God." Discover how to live in the fully restored relationship Jesus offers.
The Call to Worship
(Pastor Mark Shockey)
Pastor: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Bible tells us:
All: "God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)
How Can It Be
I am guilty
Ashamed of what I've done
What I've become
These hands are dirty
I dare not lift them up
To the Holy One
You plead my cause
You right my wrongs
You break my chains
You overcome
You gave Your life
To give me mine
You say that I am free
I've been hiding
Afraid I've let You down
Inside I doubt
That You still love me
But in Your eyes
There's only grace now
You plead my cause
You right my wrongs
You break my chains
You overcome
You gave Your life
To give me mine
You say that I am free
How can it be yeah
How can it be
Though I fall You can make me new
From this death I will rise with You
Oh the grace reaching out for me
How can it be
How can it be
You plead my cause
You right my wrongs
You break my chains
You overcome
You gave Your life
To give me mine
You say that I am free
You plead my cause
You right my wrongs
You break my chains
You overcome
You gave Your life
To give me mine
You say that I am free
How can it be yeah
How can it be
The Cross
And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death – even death on a cross!
Philippians 2:8
God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
2 Corinthians 5:21
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Galatians 2:20
For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:2
Scripture
(Kristin Moquist)
John 3:13-17 - No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
STP KIDS Dismissal
STP KIDS is the Children’s Ministry at St. Peter’s Edina, designed for all children from 6 months to 10 years old (Grade 5). Older children are welcome to participate as helpers. Our vision is to partner with parents in raising up a generation of children that will seek their God-given Kingdom mission and impact their world for Jesus!
Message: The Cross
“Once upon a time...”
“Once upon a tree...”
"God is most God when He is hanging from a tree.”
Ephesians 2:1-10, 13 (TLB) - Once you were under God’s curse, doomed forever for your sins. You went along with the crowd and were just like all the others, full of sin, obeying Satan, the mighty prince of the power of the air, who is at work right now in the hearts of those who are against the Lord. All of us used to be just as they are, our lives expressing the evil within us, doing every wicked thing that our passions or our evil thoughts might lead us into. We started out bad, being born with evil natures, and were under God’s anger just like everyone else. But God is so rich in mercy; he loved us so much that even though we were spiritually dead and doomed by our sins, he gave us back our lives again when he raised Christ from the dead—only by his undeserved favor have we ever been saved—and lifted us up from the grave into glory along with Christ, where we sit with him in the heavenly realms—all because of what Christ Jesus did. And now God can always point to us as examples of how very, very rich his kindness is, as shown in all he has done for us through Jesus Christ. Because of his kindness, you have been saved through trusting Christ. And even trusting is not of yourselves; it too is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good we have done, so none of us can take any credit for it. It is God himself who has made us what we are and given us new lives from Christ Jesus; and long ages ago he planned that we should spend these lives in helping others... But now you belong to Christ Jesus, and though you once were far away from God, now you have been brought very near to him because of what Jesus Christ has done for you with his blood.
Video: “The Cross”
Lead Me To The Cross
Savior I come quiet my soul
Remember redemption's hill
Where Your blood was spilled
For my ransom
Everything I once held dear
I count it all as loss
Lead me to the cross
Where Your love poured out
Bring me to my knees
Lord I lay me down
Rid me of myself
I belong to You
Oh lead me
Lead me to the cross
You were as I
Tempted and tried human
The word became flesh
Bore my sin in death
Now You're risen
Everything I once held dear
I count it all as loss
Lead me to the cross
Where Your love poured out
Bring me to my knees
Lord I lay me down
Rid me of myself
I belong to You
Oh lead me
Lead me to the cross
To Your heart
To Your heart
Lead me to Your heart
Lead me to Your heart
Lead me to the cross
Where Your love poured out
Bring me to my knees
Lord I lay me down
Rid me of myself
I belong to You
Oh lead me
Lead me to the cross

Communion
The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod holds the Biblical teaching that in Communion we receive the true body and blood of Jesus Christ with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins. If you are a baptized Christian who has been instructed in the Biblical teaching of the real presence of the Christ in this meal and grace through faith in Christ, and if you agree with our confession of faith, please join with the fellowship of disciples in Holy Communion.
“Everyone should examine themselves first, and then eat the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.” (1 Corinthians 11:28-29)
Prayer
If you are in need of prayer, we would love the opportunity to pray with you! You can post a prayer on our online prayer wall, or submit a private prayer to our prayer team.
The Lord’s Prayer
All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
Blessing
Colossians 2:14 (NLT) - He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.
His Name Is Jesus
The King is in the room
Come see the scars of love upon His hands
The King is in the room
We’ll watch the darkness flee at His command
Who is this King
Who is this King
His name is Jesus
His name is Jesus
Light of the world
There’s freedom in His name
Awesome in power
Reigning forever
Light of the world
There’s freedom in His name
The Healer's in the room
Let miracles break out across this place
The Savior's in the room
No soul beyond the boundaries of His grace
There’s resurrection power in His name
His name is Jesus
His name is Jesus
Light of the world
There’s freedom in His name
Awesome in power
Reigning forever
Light of the world
There’s freedom in His name
There's freedom in His name
There's freedom in His name
There’s never been a love so great
He died so we could live
Then He rose up from that grave
Name another King like this
Now all authority
Forever belongs to Him
He reigns in victory
Name another King like this
There’s never been a love so great
He died so we could live
Then He rose up from that grave
Name another King like this
Now all authority
Forever belongs to Him
He reigns in victory
Name another King like this
Name another King like this
Who is this King
His name is Jesus
His name is Jesus
Light of the world
There’s freedom in His name
Awesome in power
Reigning forever
Light of the world
There’s freedom in His name
There's freedom in His name
There's never been a King like this
His name is Jesus
