Today’s word to live by: JOY

“Do you smile all the time?” This was my daughters questions. “I do when you’re with me.” The truth is, finding joy in spite of our circumstances is a huge struggle. If we’re not careful, even the smallest frustration can rob us of joy. Jesus told His disciples that there is a brand of joy that is complete joy – the kind He experienced even when He knew the cross was just around the corner. Now that’s a circumstance we have never faced. This kind of joy is available to you and me as well, if we stay close to Him. We can experience joy in spite of any circumstance that comes our way. Every time you choose to smile genuinely even through your circumstances are less than joyful, you give evidence that the same joy Jesus experienced in spite of the cross is in you.


Believe

It is one thing to know the story of the Bible. It’s another thing to live it. We are going to pull out our Believe topical Bibles and look at the 3rd section. It will help us answer the Who am I becoming? question. To do this we will find clear Biblical guidance to help us live fruitful lives. Our themes over the next 10 Sundays will be the fruit of the Spirit. So please dig out your Believe Bible (or pick up a copy to use these weeks). Remember if you can’t be with us that the messages are available on our St. Peter’s website / YouTube channel. We previously covered Discover & Connect. Now we move on to the third part of our next step: Engage. Please bring the Believe Bible each week to use during the message.

Scripture Reading

1 Chronicles 16:23-27 - Sing to the Lord, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens. STP Kids Dismissal

STP Kids is the Children’s Ministry at St. Peter’s Edina, designed for all children from 6 months to 10 years old (Grade 5). Our vision is to partner with parents in raising up a generation of children that will seek their God-given Kingdom mission and impact their world for Jesus!


Message: Joy

John 15:9-11 - “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.”

Keys to having the Joy of the Lord

  1. Believe and trust in God’s love for us

Key Question: What gives us true happiness and contentment in life?

Key Idea: Despite my circumstances, I feel inner contentment and understand my purpose in life.

J.O.Y. = Jesus, Others, You

1 Peter 1:8-9 - Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Philippians 4:12-13 - I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

John 16:22, 33 - …no one will take away your joy….In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.

John 15:11 - I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.


Prayer


Confession of Sins

(Philippians 2)

Pastor: Therefore… if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,

People: Then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.


Assurance of Forgiveness

(Philippians 2:9-11)

People:  Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.


Communion

The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod holds the Biblical teaching that in Communion we receive the true body and blood of Jesus Christ with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins. If you are a baptized Christian who has been instructed in the Biblical teaching of the real presence of the Christ in this meal and grace through faith in Christ, and if you agree with our confession of faith, please join with the fellowship of disciples in Holy Communion.

“Everyone should examine themselves first, and then eat the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.” (1 Corinthians 11:28-29)


The Lord’s Prayer

People: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Offerings

Living Out Your Faith

Prayer Requests

  • May the Lord give us joy despite our circumstances. May we discover inner contentment and understand our purpose in life.

  • As we look to the ministry year before us and the many opportunities it brings, may the Lord lead us to honor our pledge to support our ministry goals.
