Words To Live By - Self-Control

Welcome!

Thanks for joining us this morning! We’re so glad you’re here with us. If you’re new here and want to find out a bit more about our service, have questions, or want to connect, click the button below.

Today’s word to live by: SELF-CONTROL

"I have the power to control myself." No. I don't. And neither do you. Saying "have to" only makes us want to do the things we shouldn't do more. But Jesus gives us the power to say no to those things that harm us and others. Try this grace filled statement instead: "I have the power THROUGH CHRIST to control myself."

Believe

Our themes for 10 Sundays this Summer is the Fruit of the Spirit. To do this we will find clear Biblical guidance to help us live fruitful lives. We are using the Believe topical Bible. You may pick up a copy at the Welcome Center. (The Bible readings are also listed below to read in your own Bible.) Then make sure you are reading along and listening to all 10 messages either in-person or on our St. Peter’s website / YouTube channel. Today we are in Chapter 24, SELF-CONTROL. You may find it helpful to bring the Believe Bible each week to use during the message.

Order of Worship

Lord I Need You

Lord I come I confess
Bowing here I find my rest
Without You I fall apart
You're the one that guides my heart

Lord I need You
Oh I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You

Where sin runs deep
Your grace is more
Where grace is found
Is where You are
And where You are
Lord I am free
Holiness is Christ in me

Lord I need You
Oh I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You

So teach my song to rise to You
When temptation comes my way
And when I cannot stand I'll fall on You
Jesus You're my hope and stay

Lord I need You
Oh I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You
You're my one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You

My one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You

Greeting & Invocation

Baptism

Baptism Creed

Pastor: Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty?

People: Yes, I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

Pastor: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son?

People:  Yes, I believe in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

Pastor: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?

People: Yes, I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Cornerstone

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly trust in Jesus' Name

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly trust in Jesus' Name

Christ alone cornerstone
Weak made strong
In the Savior’s love
Through the storm
He is Lord Lord of all

When darkness seems to hide His face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil
My anchor holds within the veil

Christ alone cornerstone
Weak made strong
In the Savior’s love
Through the storm
He is Lord Lord of all

Christ alone cornerstone
Weak made strong
In the Savior’s love
Through the storm
He is Lord Lord of all

When He shall come with trumpet sound
Oh may I then in Him be found
Dressed in His righteousness alone
Faultless stand before the throne

Christ alone cornerstone
Weak made strong
In the Savior’s love
Through the storm
He is Lord Lord of all

Message: Self-Control

Key Question - How does God free me from addictions and sinful habits?

Key Idea - I have the power through Christ to control myself.

Titus 2:11-13 - For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ

Galatians 5:17 - For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit

Galatians 5:17 - And the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.

Titus 2:11-12 - The grace of God…It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives…

2 Timothy 3:1-5 - But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

James 4:6-8 - But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you.

Titus 2:11-12 - The grace of God…It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives…

Invitation to Live A Life of Self-Control

Pastor: Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things,

People: But those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.

Pastor: So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death.

People: But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.

Pastor: For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God. But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.

People: And Christ lives within us, so even though my body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives me life because I have been made right with God.

Pastor: The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

Communion

The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod holds the Biblical teaching that in Communion we receive the true body and blood of Jesus Christ with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins. If you are a baptized Christian who has been instructed in the Biblical teaching of the real presence of the Christ in this meal and grace through faith in Christ, and if you agree with our confession of faith, please join with the fellowship of disciples in Holy Communion.

“Everyone should examine themselves first, and then eat the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.” (1 Corinthians 11:28-29)

Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer

People: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

1 Peter 5:10-11 - And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Come Thou Fount

Come Thou Fount of ev'ry blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy redeeming love

Here I raise my Ebenezer
Hither by Thy help I come
And I hope by Thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wand'ring from the fold of God
He to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood

Oh to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
Let Thy goodness like a fetter
Bind my wand'ring heart to Thee
Prone to wander Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above
Here's my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above

Here's my heart Lord take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above

Offerings

There is a basket at the entrance to the sanctuary to present an offering during in-person worship. Here are additional opportunities for giving as part of your worship:

Prayer Requests

  • May the Holy Spirit fill our lives, our homes, our conversations, our friendships with self-control so that we give a witness to the care and compassion of our Lord and Savior in all we do and say and the way we carry ourselves.

  • We rejoice in the opportunity to share the hope that is ours in Jesus with community families. Through baptism God’s family has grown during July. May homes be filled with Christ’s presence.

  • We currently have one opening in our High-5 classroom for the fall. May the Lord draw the young boy or girl and family to St. Peter’s so we may introduce them to Jesus and serve them with love and acceptance.

  • Pray for the family of Pastor Vic Meyr who was called to glory this week. Pastor Meyr served beside Pastor Miller as an interim pastor from 1998-2000.

  • Pray for the work of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and our local mission efforts here in the Twin Cities area. We are blessed to partner with dedicated disciples as we share the gospel with people of all ages and backgrounds.
