Greeting and Announcements

A man asked Jesus, "Who is my neighbor?" The term translated "neighbor" means one who is near. He is asking, "Who is close enough to me that I must respond with love, as the commandment says?" Jesus answers by telling a story. Listen and learn a whole fresh way to love our neighbors.

Invocation

Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Confession & Forgiveness

Pastor: Almighty God has revealed to us His requirements for living in His kingdom. We are fully aware what God demands: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." (Luke 10:27)

All: But we confess that too often we have focused on our own desires, we have been lazy, we have been preoccupied, we have discriminated against our neighbors, and we have loved our neighbor only after having our own needs met. In truth, we have sinned against God and against our neighbor.

Pastor: Jesus is the ultimate neighbor, who found us dead in our trespasses, healed our spiritual wounds, paid for what we owed by the sacrifice of Himself on the cross in our stead, and will return to lead us into a home of eternal peace.

All: Therefore, we ask for God to be gracious to us and forgive us our sins for Jesus' sake.

Pastor: As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Scripture Reading

Deuteronomy 8:7-20 - For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land —a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills. When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock. He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you. You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today. If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed. Like the nations the LORD destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the LORD your God.

Egypt

I won’t forget
The wonder of how You brought
Deliverance
The exodus of my heart
You found me
You freed me
Held back the waters for my release
Oh Yahweh

You’re the God who fights for me
Lord of every victory
Hallelujah hallelujah
You have torn apart the sea
You have led me through the deep
Hallelujah hallelujah

A cloud by day
Is a sign that You are with me
The fire by night
Is the guiding light to my feet
You found me
You freed me
Held back the waters for my release
Oh Yahweh

You’re the God who fights for me
Lord of every victory
Hallelujah hallelujah
You have torn apart the sea
You have led me through the deep
Hallelujah hallelujah

'Cause You stepped into my Egypt
And You took me by the hand
You marched me out in freedom
Into the promised land
Now I will not forget You God
I’ll sing of all You’ve done
Death is swallowed up forever
By the fury of Your love

You’re the God who fights for me
Lord of every victory
Hallelujah hallelujah
You have torn apart the sea
You have led me through the deep
Hallelujah hallelujah

You’re the God who fights for me
Lord of every victory
Hallelujah hallelujah
You have torn apart the sea
You have led me through the deep
Hallelujah hallelujah

Message: Who Is My Neighbor?

Luke 10:25-37 - On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Jesus didn’t tell him WHO to neighbor. Jesus told him HOW to neighbor.

Acts 17:26 - From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.

Romans 10:12-13 - For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile —the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

The Lord’s Prayer

All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

Psalm 67:4 - May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples with equity and guide the nations of the earth.

Who You Say I Am

Who am I that the highest King
Would welcome me
I was lost but He brought me in
Oh His love for me
Oh His love for me

Who the Son sets free
Oh is free indeed
I'm a child of God
Yes I am

Free at last He has ransomed me
His grace runs deep
While I was a slave to sin
Jesus died for me
Yes He died for me

Who the Son sets free
Oh is free indeed
I'm a child of God
Yes I am
In my Father's house
There's a place for me
I'm a child of God
Yes I am

I am chosen not forsaken
I am who You say I am
You are for me not against me
I am who You say I am
I am chosen not forsaken
I am who You say I am
You are for me not against me
I am who You say I am
I am who You say I am

Who the Son sets free
Oh is free indeed
I'm a child of God
Yes I am
In my Father's house
There's a place for me
I'm a child of God
Yes I am
