Today's Word to Live By: GUIDANCE

Where do you find guidance for life? Discover guidance you can count on for life today and a clear path for the future. That guidance is found in the Bible -- Jesus is the Way. And He is born in us today.

Lighting of the Advent Candles

Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

Pastor: We light the third candle on the Advent wreath as a bright light that reminds us of the guidance we have in God’s Word and in our Savior Jesus, the Word made flesh.

People: Holy Child of Bethlehem, be born in us today. Guide us according to the truth of your Word.

Pastor: Almighty God, you have given us the gift of Your holy Word. In its sacred pages we learn of the Messiah as proclaimed through the prophets.

People: May we find comfort, hope and guidance through the Holy Scriptures. Help us by your Spirit to grow stronger in faith as we read and study the Scriptures to learn all that you have done for us.

Pastor: Hear our prayer and accept our praise in Jesus’ name.

People: Amen.

Scripture Reading

Luke 1:67-79 - His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied: “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come to his people and redeemed them. He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago), salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us—to show mercy to our ancestors and to remember his holy covenant, the oath he swore to our father Abraham: to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve him without fear in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.”

STP Kids Dismissal

STP Kids is the Children’s Ministry at St. Peter’s Edina, designed for all children from 6 months to 10 years old (Grade 5). Our vision is to partner with parents in raising up a generation of children that will seek their God-given Kingdom mission and impact their world for Jesus!

Message: Guidance

Psalm 31:3- For you are my rock and my fortress; and for your name's sake you lead me and guide me

Proverbs 3:5-6 - Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Luke 1:19-20 - The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”

Cornerstone

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly trust in Jesus' Name

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly trust in Jesus' Name

Christ alone cornerstone
Weak made strong
In the Savior’s love
Through the storm
He is Lord Lord of all

When darkness seems to hide His face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil
My anchor holds within the veil

Christ alone cornerstone
Weak made strong
In the Savior’s love
Through the storm
He is Lord Lord of all

Christ alone cornerstone
Weak made strong
In the Savior’s love
Through the storm
He is Lord Lord of all

When He shall come with trumpet sound
Oh may I then in Him be found
Dressed in His righteousness alone
Faultless stand before the throne

Christ alone cornerstone
Weak made strong
In the Savior’s love
Through the storm
He is Lord Lord of all

Prayer

Confession & Forgiveness

Pastor: Let us confess our sins to God and ask his forgiveness.

People: Almighty God, You have given us your Word to teach us the way of salvation and to guide us in living. We confess that we often turn away from that guidance and follow our own sinful, self-centered ways. We listen to the direction of the world instead of keeping Your Word. Have mercy on us and forgive us.

Pastor: In mercy, God sent his Son into the world to be our Savior. Jesus took our sins onto himself and carried them to the cross, where he suffered the penalty of death in our place. I announce to you that your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

People: Lord God, guide our feet in the way of peace!

Communion

The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod holds the Biblical teaching that in Communion we receive the true body and blood of Jesus Christ with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins. If you are a baptized Christian who has been instructed in the Biblical teaching of the real presence of the Christ in this meal and grace through faith in Christ, and if you agree with our confession of faith, please join with the fellowship of disciples in Holy Communion.

“Everyone should examine themselves first, and then eat the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.” (1 Corinthians 11:28-29)

The Lord’s Prayer

People: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

Psalm 25:5 - Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

O Come O Come Emmanuel

O come O come Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear

Rejoice rejoice Emmanuel
Shall come to thee O Israel

O come Thou Dayspring come and cheer
Thy spirit by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight

Rejoice rejoice Emmanuel
Shall come to thee O Israel

Rejoice rejoice Emmanuel
Shall come to thee O Israel
Rejoice rejoice Emmanuel
Shall come to thee O Israel
