Words To Live By - Sabbath
Welcome!
Today's Word to Live By is SABBATH.
What does the sabbath mean? Are you keeping it? Do we still need to today?
ORDER OF WORSHIP
Egypt
I won’t forget
The wonder of how You brought
Deliverance
The exodus of my heart
You found me
You freed me
Held back the waters for my release
Oh Yahweh
You’re the God who fights for me
Lord of every victory
Hallelujah hallelujah
You have torn apart the sea
You have led me through the deep
Hallelujah hallelujah
A cloud by day
Is a sign that You are with me
The fire by night
Is the guiding light to my feet
You found me
You freed me
Held back the waters for my release
Oh Yahweh
You’re the God who fights for me
Lord of every victory
Hallelujah hallelujah
You have torn apart the sea
You have led me through the deep
Hallelujah hallelujah
'Cause You stepped into my Egypt
And You took me by the hand
You marched me out in freedom
Into the promised land
Now I will not forget You God
I’ll sing of all You’ve done
Death is swallowed up forever
By the fury of Your love
You’re the God who fights for me
Lord of every victory
Hallelujah hallelujah
You have torn apart the sea
You have led me through the deep
Hallelujah hallelujah
You’re the God who fights for me
Lord of every victory
Hallelujah hallelujah
You have torn apart the sea
You have led me through the deep
Hallelujah hallelujah
Welcome
Litany on the Sabbath
Pastor: “Observe the Sabbath day by keeping holy.”
People: “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work.”
Pastor: Heavenly Father, Your ways are wonderful, Your love boundless, Your grace unceasing.
People: May our homes be filled with a Sabbath awareness of our Your presence among us. Amen
Holy Spirit
There's nothing worth more
That will ever come close
No thing can compare
You're our living hope
Your Presence Lord
I've tasted and seen
Of the sweetest of loves
Where my heart becomes free
And my shame is undone
Your Presence Lord
Holy Spirit You are welcome here
Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere
Your glory God is what our hearts long for
To be overcome by Your Presence Lord
Your Presence Lord
There's nothing worth more
That will ever come close
No thing can compare
You're our living hope
Your Presence Lord
I've tasted and seen
Of the sweetest of loves
Where my heart becomes free
And my shame is undone
Your Presence Lord
Holy Spirit You are welcome here
Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere
Your glory God is what our hearts long for
To be overcome by Your Presence Lord
Your Presence Lord
Let us become more aware of Your Presence
Let us experience the glory of Your goodness
Let us become more aware of Your Presence
Let us experience the glory of Your goodness
Let us become more aware of Your Presence
Let us experience the glory of Your goodness
Holy Spirit You are welcome here
Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere
Your glory God is what our hearts long for
To be overcome by Your Presence Lord
Scripture Reading
Luke 4:16-22 [Jesus] went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.
STP Kids Dismissal
STP Kids is the Children’s Ministry at St. Peter’s Edina, designed for all children from 6 months to 10 years old (Grade 5). Our vision is to partner with parents in raising up a generation of children that will seek their God-given Kingdom mission and impact their world for Jesus!
Message: Sabbath
Exodus 20:8-11 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
What Does the Sabbath Mean?
Work six days a week
Rest one day a week
Use your time of rest for reflection and worship
Don't become burdened by legalistic minutia
You need a sabbath so that you remember what God has done for you.
You need a sabbath so that you remember you can’t do it all.
You need a sabbath so that you remember you need spiritual renewal and refreshment.
Matthew 11:28-29 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."
You need a sabbath so that you discover it is about what God wants to do within you.
Prayer
Communion
The Lord’s Supper is celebrated at this congregation in the confession and glad confidence that, as He says, our Lord gives into our mouths not only bread and wine but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He forgives and loves us, that they may show forth His death until He comes.
Because those who eat and drink our Lord’s body and blood unworthily do so to their great harm and because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked first to speak with the pastor. (see 1 Corinthians 11)
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
Blessing
Hebrews 4:9-10 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.
Lord I Need You
Lord I come I confess
Bowing here I find my rest
Without You I fall apart
You're the one that guides my heart
Lord I need You
Oh I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You
Where sin runs deep
Your grace is more
Where grace is found
Is where You are
And where You are
Lord I am free
Holiness is Christ in me
Lord I need You
Oh I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You
So teach my song to rise to You
When temptation comes my way
And when I cannot stand I'll fall on You
Jesus You're my hope and stay
Lord I need You
Oh I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You
You're my one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You
My one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You
Prayer Requests
“Sabbath” May you discover rest the Lord desires to provide for you.
Pray circles around our location. More than 90 years ago the Spirit was answering the prayers of men and women who felt the Lord leading them to plant a new church. They selected an undeveloped piece of land on France Ave. Today it looks very different, but we are still here for the same purpose: to share the Good News with those living and moving into this community.
Pray for Pam, Joann Shockey’s childhood friend, who will undergo surgery on Thursday for a 2nd brain tumor.
