Words To Live By - Authority

Welcome!

Today's Word to Live By is Authority.

People are put in positions of authority through positions or appointment or elections. Jesus had authority. It wasn't conferred upon Him. He always had it.  Anyone near Him recognized it.  Expect Christ to do something authoritative in your life this week.

ORDER OF WORSHIP

Champion

I’ve tried so hard to see it
Took me so long to believe it
That You’d choose someone like me
To carry Your victory

Perfection could never earn it
You give what we don’t deserve and
You take the broken things
And raise them to glory

You are my champion
Giants fall when You stand undefeated
Every battle You’ve won
I am who You say I am
You crown me with confidence
I am seated
In the heavenly place undefeated
With the one who has conquered it all

Now I can finally see it
You’re teaching me how to receive it
So let all the striving cease
This is my victory

You are my champion
Giants fall when You stand undefeated
Every battle You’ve won
I am who You say I am
You crown me with confidence
I am seated
In the heavenly place undefeated
With the one who has conquered it all

When I lift my voice and shout
Every wall comes crashing down
I have the authority
Jesus has given me
When I open up my mouth
Miracles start breaking out
I have the authority
Jesus has given me

You are my champion
Giants fall when You stand undefeated
Every battle You’ve won
I am who You say I am
You crown me with confidence
I am seated
In the heavenly place undefeated
By the power of Your name
I am seated
In the heavenly place undefeated
With the one who has conquered it all

Welcome

Tremble

Peace bring it all to peace
The storms surrounding me
Let it break at Your name
Still call the sea to still
The rage in me to still
Every wave at Your name

Jesus Jesus You make the darkness tremble
Jesus Jesus You silence fear
Jesus Jesus You make the darkness tremble
Jesus Jesus

Breathe call these bones to live
Call these lungs to sing
Once again I will praise

Jesus Jesus You make the darkness tremble
Jesus Jesus You silence fear
Jesus Jesus You make the darkness tremble
Jesus Jesus

Your name is a light that the shadows can't deny
Your name cannot be overcome
Your name is alive forever lifted high
Your name cannot be overcome

Jesus Jesus You make the darkness tremble
Jesus Jesus You silence fear
Jesus Jesus You make the darkness tremble
Jesus Jesus

Jesus Jesus
Jesus Jesus
Jesus Jesus You make the darkness tremble
Jesus Jesus

Scripture Reading

Luke 4:31-37 Then [Jesus] went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority. In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, “Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him. All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.

STP Kids Dismissal

STP Kids is the Children’s Ministry at St. Peter’s Edina, designed for all children from 6 months to 10 years old (Grade 5). Our vision is to partner with parents in raising up a generation of children that will seek their God-given Kingdom mission and impact their world for Jesus!

Message: Authority

Luke 4:36-37 All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.

What do you do when you are confronted by Jesus’ authority?

Examples of Jesus’ Authority

  1. Jesus taught with authority. (Luke 4:31-32)

  2. Jesus healed with authority. (Luke 4:23-26)

  3. Jesus saves with authority. (Luke 4:27-28)

Prayer

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

Matthew 28:18–20 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

See A Victory

The weapon may be formed but it won't prosper
When the darkness falls it won't prevail
'Cause the God I serve knows only how to triumph
My God will never fail
My God will never fail

I'm gonna see a victory
I'm gonna see a victory
For the battle belongs to You Lord
I'm gonna see a victory
I'm gonna see a victory
For the battle belongs to You Lord

There's power in the mighty Name of Jesus
Every war He wages He will win
I'm not backing down from any giant
I know how this story ends
I know how this story ends

I'm gonna see a victory
I'm gonna see a victory
For the battle belongs to You Lord
I'm gonna see a victory
I'm gonna see a victory
For the battle belongs to You Lord

You take what the enemy meant for evil
And You turn it for good
You turn it for good
You take what the enemy meant for evil
And You turn it for good
You turn it for good
You take what the enemy meant for evil
And You turn it for good
You turn it for good
You take what the enemy meant for evil
And You turn it for good
You turn it for good

I'm gonna see a victory
I'm gonna see a victory
For the battle belongs to You Lord
I'm gonna see a victory
I'm gonna see a victory
For the battle belongs to You Lord

Prayer Requests

  • “Authority” Jesus spoke with authority, power, and love. Pray that you might listen attentively.

  • Pray circles around an Option to Purchase that is being considered for a partnership with St. Peter’s & AbleLight. It is the next step as we work on terms and details of a formal purchase agreement to include the development of a new community facility intentionally including ministry to people with disabilities. It will provide updated space for worship and other church activities.

  • Pray that the Lord will surround St. Peter’s with protection and healing for those battling the latest COVID-19 variant.

  • Pray for Pam, Joann Shockey’s friend since childhood, who is recovering from brain tumor removal. She will need additional chemo and radiation. Rejoice in her strong faith, and pray that the Lord will give her joy for today and eternity.

  • Pray for Jamie Grimm as she spends the next 5 months as an exchange student at Hansei University just outside Seoul, Korea. She asks for safe travels / staying overall healthy while away / for God to give her the diligence and abilities to do well in her studies / for God to open up new opportunities in South Korea to strengthen her faith and grow closer to Him.

Voters’ Assembly February 6

Our regular February Voters’ Assembly will be held Sunday, February 6 following the worship service. Since March 2021, we have been exploring a partnership with AbleLight (formerly Bethesda) to build a multi-family community on our property. This new facility will serve the community, intentionally including people with disabilities, providing space for worship and other church activities. After a number of Town Hall meetings and meetings with the St. Peter’s / AbleLight exploration task force, we are ready to take the next step and negotiate the terms of the sale. To proceed with this next step, it is necessary for AbleLight to obtain an Option to Purchase Agreement from St. Peter’s. This Option to Purchase agreement simply states that St. Peter’s will work with AbleLight on the terms of a formal Purchase Agreement and not entertain any other offers for our property. Because this Option to Purchase Agreement involves the potential sale of our real estate, this Agreement must come before the members for a vote. This meeting includes a discussion and vote on the Option to Purchase Agreement.
