Words To Live By - Afraid

Welcome!

They all went through something they didn't understand. They didn't know what to think, what to say, what to do. They were afraid. Can you relate?

Today's Word to Live By is AFRIAD.

ORDER OF WORSHIP

Tremble

Peace bring it all to peace
The storms surrounding me
Let it break at Your name
Still call the sea to still
The rage in me to still
Every wave at Your name

Jesus Jesus You make the darkness tremble
Jesus Jesus You silence fear
Jesus Jesus You make the darkness tremble
Jesus Jesus

Breathe call these bones to live
Call these lungs to sing
Once again I will praise

Jesus Jesus You make the darkness tremble
Jesus Jesus You silence fear
Jesus Jesus You make the darkness tremble
Jesus Jesus

Your name is a light that the shadows can't deny
Your name cannot be overcome
Your name is alive forever lifted high
Your name cannot be overcome

Jesus Jesus You make the darkness tremble
Jesus Jesus You silence fear
Jesus Jesus You make the darkness tremble
Jesus Jesus

Jesus Jesus
Jesus Jesus
Jesus Jesus You make the darkness tremble
Jesus Jesus

No Longer Slaves

You unravel me with a melody
You surround me with a song
Of deliverance from my enemies
Till all my fears are gone

I'm no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I'm no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

From my Mother's womb
You have chosen me
Love has called my name
I've been born again
Into Your family
Your blood flows through my veins

I'm no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I'm no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I'm no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I'm no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh

You split the sea so I could walk right through it
My fears were drowned in perfect love
You rescued me so I could stand and sing
I am a child of God
You split the sea so I could walk right through it
My fears were drowned in perfect love
You rescued me so I could stand and sing
I am a child of God

I am a child of God
I am a child of God
I am a child of God

Prayer of the Day

Pastor: O God of love and mercy, how good it is to be here today and to hear once again that You are faithful, that You keep all Your promises of love towards us. Open our eyes to see Your goodness. Open our ears to hear Your words of promise. Open our minds to understand how great Your love is for us.

People: Open our lips and our mouths to declare Your praise. Amen.

Scripture Reading

Luke 9:28-36 - About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure,[a] which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.) While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.

STP Kids Dismissal

Message: Afraid

Luke 9:28-33 - About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)

Luke 9:34 - While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.

Luke 9:35-36 - A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.

Two Great Fears We All Face

  1. Afraid of _________________

  2. Afraid to _________________

Romans 8:1 - Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus

1 John 4:18 - There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

Hebrews 13:5-6 - Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.

Luke 5:10-11 - Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid…" So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

Matthew 28:10 - Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

Prayer

Confession and Assurance of Pardon

Pastor: God is holy. We humbly stand before Him. Father, You know who we are…

People: You know our doubt
You know our fear
You know our apathy
You know our deceit
You know our attempts at self-glory
You know our hopelessness without You

Forgive us, we pray. Your mercy is boundless. We see that in the death of Your Son. We trust in the sufficiency of His cross and empty tomb. We await Your word of peace.

Communion

The Lord’s Supper is celebrated at this congregation in the confession and glad confidence that, as He says, our Lord gives into our mouths not only bread and wine but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He forgives and loves us, that they may show forth His death until He comes.

Because those who eat and drink our Lord’s body and blood unworthily do so to their great harm and because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked first to speak with the pastor. (see 1 Corinthians 11)

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

John 14:27 - Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Oh Wondrous Type Oh Vision Fair

Oh wondrous type Oh vision fair
Of glory that the Church may share
Which Christ upon the mountain shows
Where brighter than the sun He glows

With Moses and Elijah nigh
The Incarnate Lord holds converse high
And from the cloud the Holy One
Bears record to the only Son

With shining face and bright array
Christ deigns to manifest today
What glory shall be theirs above
Who joy in God with perfect love

O Father with the eternal Son
And Holy Spirit ever one
We pray you bring us by Your grace
To see Your glory face to face

Ash Wednesday

You are welcome to join us during Lent for reflective time that will make use of some of the great hymns of the passion. We will gather in person this Wednesday on Ash Wednesay, March 2 at 6pm and also for Maundy Thursday & Good Friday. The other midweek Lenten reflections on Wednesdays will be an emailed hymn and accompanying devotion.

Pastor Led Sunday Bible Class

Every Sunday you are invited to join with fellow worshipers to study the Sunday texts more in depth. Examine the context to see the setting of the story. Be challenged to apply Biblical truth to your life. At 10:30am in the Discipleship Room to the right as you exit the sanctuary. Bring a cup of coffee and pick up a treat to enjoy on your way in. Life Application Bibles are provided for your study. The disciples found themselves afraid. What next?

Intersections

They are places where faith and real life meet. Here at St. Peter's, we are beginning some short workshops that will prepare you to live out our faith in practical ways. Intersections are brief 15-minute workshops where Pastor Mark will present a brief insight with a few suggestions to help you apply it. They will all be online so there will be no travel. Participate from anywhere. Each Intersection will be live and participatory. 8:00am on the even Saturdays every month (not the odd Saturdays!) Here is the Zoom Link.
The next Intersections:

  • Email: getting control of your email... so it doesn't control you - March 12

  • The Blessing: learn how to bless your loved ones this spring - March 26

  • Households: the Bible mentions households over 2000 times - define your influence - April 2
