He Gets Us - Lured

Jesus had a following. People came to Him to hear about His extreme views on love - many because they found hope in His words. But some felt threatened by those words. Satan lured Him into traps. They wanted Him canceled.

Greeting & Announcements

Invitation to Worship (Psalm 46)

Come and listen, all you who fear God; let us tell you what He has done for us.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.

He knows our problems and fears. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth faces tragedy and we struggle with hatred, disease, drugs, crime, and abuse.

The Lord almighty is with us; God is our fortress.

Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.  Listen and you will again hear Him speaking: “Relax, stop fretting, and remember that I am still your God.”

The Lord almighty is with us; God is our fortress.

Come and listen, all you who fear God; let us tell you what He has done for us.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.

Lord I Need You

Lord I come I confess
Bowing here I find my rest
Without You I fall apart
You're the one that guides my heart

Lord I need You
Oh I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You

Where sin runs deep
Your grace is more
Where grace is found
Is where You are
And where You are
Lord I am free
Holiness is Christ in me

Lord I need You
Oh I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You

So teach my song to rise to You
When temptation comes my way
And when I cannot stand I'll fall on You
Jesus You're my hope and stay

Lord I need You
Oh I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You
You're my one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You

My one defense
My righteousness
Oh God how I need You

Scripture Reading

Matthew 4:1-11 - Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

STP KIDS Dismissal

STP KIDS is the Children’s Ministry at St. Peter’s Edina, designed for all children from 6 months to 10 years old (Grade 5). Older children are welcome to participate as helpers. Message - Was Jesus Ever Tempted?

1 Corinthians 10:13 - No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

Job 31:1 - “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.”

Matthew 5:27-29 - “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

James 4:7 - Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Mark 1:9-13 - At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.

Renew Me O Eternal Light

Renew me O eternal Light
And let my heart and soul be bright
Illumined with the light of grace
That issues from Your holy face

Remove the pow'r of sin from me
And cleanse all my impurity
That I may have the strength and will
Temptations of the flesh to still

Create in me a new heart Lord
That gladly I obey Your Word
Let what You will be my desire
And with new life my soul inspire

Grant that I only You may love
And seek those things which are above
Till I behold You face to face
O Light eternal through Your grace

Prayer

If you are in need of prayer, we would love the opportunity to pray with you! You can post a prayer on our online prayer wall, or submit a private prayer to our prayer team.

Confession & Forgiveness

Pastor: Do you believe that you are a sinner?

All: Yes, I believe it. I am a sinner.

Pastor: How do you know this?

All: From the Ten Commandments, which I have not kept.

Pastor: Are you sorry for your sins?

All: Yes, I am sorry that I have sinned against God.

Pastor: What have you deserved from God because of your sins?

All: His wrath and displeasure, temporal death, and eternal damnation.

Pastor: Do you hope to be saved?

All: Yes, that is my hope.

Pastor: In whom do you trust?

All: In my dear Lord Jesus Christ.

Pastor: Who is Christ?

All: The Son of God, true God and man.

Pastor: What has Christ done for you that you trust in Him?

All: He died for me and shed His blood for me on the cross for the forgiveness of sins.

Pastor: Why should we remember and proclaim His death?

All: First, so we may learn to believe that no creature could make satisfaction for our sins. Only Christ, true God and man, could do that. Second, so we may learn to be horrified by our sins, and to regard them as very serious. Third, so we may find joy and comfort in Christ alone, and through faith in Him be saved.

Pastor: What motivated Christ to die and make full payment for your sins?

All: His great love for His Father and for me and other sinners, as it is written in Scripture.

Pastor: Finally, do you believe that the word of Christ’s forgiveness I proclaim to you is from the Lord Himself?

All: Yes, I do.

Pastor: Receive the forgiveness Christ won for you by His passion, death, and resurrection. By the command of our Lord Jesus Christ I, a called and ordained servant of the Word, forgive you your sins, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Communion

The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod holds the Biblical teaching that in Communion we receive the true body and blood of Jesus Christ with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins. If you are a baptized Christian who has been instructed in the Biblical teaching of the real presence of the Christ in this meal and grace through faith in Christ, and if you agree with our confession of faith, please join with the fellowship of disciples in Holy Communion.

“Everyone should examine themselves first, and then eat the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.” (1 Corinthians 11:28-29)

The Lord’s Prayer

All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
