Words To Live By - Cross

Welcome!

Thanks for joining us this morning! We’re so glad you’re here with us. If you’re new here and want to find out a bit more about our service, have questions, or want to connect, click the button below.

Greeting

Our service is led by Pastor Dave Garwick. Dave retired from full-time ministry, but serves us each week by leading our Sunday morning Bible Class, (you are invited at 10:30am). We are honored that Pastor Dave and his wife Ann are part of the St. Peter’s family and pray you will be blessed by his message about the cross this morning.

Does the cross make a difference for you? Are those words comforting? The cross did what we could not do. It granted us the right to talk with, love, and even live with God. Not one of us can do that by ourselves. You can’t be good enough. That is why you need the cross.

Lift High The Cross

Lift high the cross
The love of Christ proclaim
Till all the world adore
His sacred name

Come Christians follow
Where our captain trod
Our King victorious
Christ the Son of God

Lift high the cross
The love of Christ proclaim
Till all the world adore
His sacred name

Led on their way by
This triumphant sign
The hosts of God
In conquering ranks combine

Lift high the cross
The love of Christ proclaim
Till all the world adore
His sacred name

All newborn soldiers
Of the crucified
Bear on their brows
The seal of Him who died

Lift high the cross
The love of Christ proclaim
Till all the world adore
His sacred name

O Lord once lifted
On the glorious tree
Raise us and let
Your cross the magnet be

Lift high the cross
The love of Christ proclaim
Till all the world adore
His sacred name

So shall our song of
Triumph ever be
Praise to the
Crucified for victory

Lift high the cross
The love of Christ proclaim
Till all the world adore
His sacred name

Confession and Forgiveness of Sins

Pastor: In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen

Pastor: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love You and worthily magnify Your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

People: Amen

Pastor: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness, as we now take a moment to examine our hearts before God: Most merciful God,

People: We confess that we are bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against You in thought, word and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

Pastor: Almighty God, in His mercy, has given His Son to die for us and, for His sake, forgive us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore declare unto you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Scripture Reading

Acts 2:22-24 - “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know—this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

Message: Cross

1 Corinthians 2:1-2 - When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

Matthew 5:10 - “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Matthew 5:11 - “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.”

Matthew 5:12 - “Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Matthew 5:38-42 - “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.”

Matthew 10:38 - “Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.”

“We confess that we ARE bondage to sin and CANNOT free ourselves. Amen.”

“Almighty God, in His mercy, has given His Son to die for us and, for His sake, forgive us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore declare unto you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

Romans 6:5 - “…if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.”

How Can It Be

I am guilty
Ashamed of what I've done
What I've become
These hands are dirty
I dare not lift them up
To the Holy One

You plead my cause
You right my wrongs
You break my chains
You overcome
You gave Your life
To give me mine
You say that I am free

I've been hiding
Afraid I've let You down
Inside I doubt
That You still love me
But in Your eyes
There's only grace now

You plead my cause
You right my wrongs
You break my chains
You overcome
You gave Your life
To give me mine
You say that I am free
How can it be yeah
How can it be

Though I fall
You can make me new
From this death
I will rise with You
Oh the grace
Reaching out for me
How can it be
How can it be

You plead my cause
You right my wrongs
You break my chains
You overcome
You gave Your life
To give me mine
You say that I am free

You plead my cause
You right my wrongs
You break my chains
You overcome
You gave Your life
To give me mine
You say that I am free
How can it be yeah
How can it be

Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer

People: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

Philippians 2:5-8 - Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Living Hope

How great the chasm that lay between us
How high the mountain I could not climb
In desperation I turned to heaven
And spoke Your name into the night
Then through the darkness Your loving-kindness
Tore through the shadows of my soul
The work is finished the end is written
Jesus Christ my living hope

Who could imagine so great a mercy
What heart could fathom such boundless grace
The God of ages stepped down from glory
To wear my sin and bear my shame
The cross has spoken I am forgiven
The King of kings calls me His own
Beautiful Savior I’m Yours forever
Jesus Christ my living hope

Hallelujah
Praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah
Death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in Your name
Jesus Christ my living hope
Hallelujah
Praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah
Death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in Your name
Jesus Christ my living hope

Then came the morning that sealed the promise
Your buried body began to breathe
Out of the silence the Roaring Lion
Declared the grave has no claim on me
Then came the morning that sealed the promise
Your buried body began to breathe
Out of the silence the Roaring Lion
Declared the grave has no claim on me
Jesus Yours is the victory

Hallelujah
Praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah
Death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in Your name
Jesus Christ my living hope
Hallelujah
Praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah
Death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in Your name
Jesus Christ my living hope
Jesus Christ my living hope
Oh God You are my living hope
